inside the beautiful sapna cafe
“Sapna Café, a clean-lined but utterly winsome outpost for healthy, globally inspired food situated on Grand Avenue and McKinley Street, of all places. Doesn’t sound like a dining destination, does it? Well, that’s how much Phoenix is changing. Housed at the pointy, pie-wedge end of the old Bragg’s Pie Building (a ’40s-era testament to Streamline Moderne), this tiny, sunlit café - its long windows hung with gauzy Indian prints, its walls filled with whimsical art - has an urban vibe that perfectly suits this funky, up-and-coming neighborhood. There’s a renaissance going on here as shops, restaurants and galleries move into architecturally interesting buildings (many historic) that have gone neglected for years. So although Sapna chef-owner Ana Borrajo is a self-described globetrotter, she’s a pioneer too, taking a risk on a part of town that’s still considered iffy.”

Here are some pics of Desiree and I working together on our artwork.
This project pairs artists with children with JRA [Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis]. The two work together to create a piece of artwork. The artwork is then auctioned off at an October fundraiser. The money raised goes towards scholarships for JRA children to attend special camps especially created for their needs, conducted throughout the year. I have been paired with a very creative young girl named Desiree. I’ll post photos as we go through our creative process. I didn’t get a photo of her on the first night, but I did make another friend, Abby, who is five - but will be six very soon. (Jen and Abby below, discussing “Cinderella 3.”)

My good buddy, Jen, is turning 40. For her birthday present I invited her over to paint. Her painting is her present. She had a great time. Worked 4 hours plus on a 36″ square canvas. She ended up with a beautiful abstract piece titled, “The journey is the truth.” She used collage, adding a portion of Sojourner Truth’s speech titled, “Ain’t I a woman.” Below is Jen getting into the moment.

Just returned from a lovely trip to Florida. First week was spent in St. Augustine, our old haunt and college town. Second week, Emma and I spent in the panhandle visiting with family, old friends and new friends. It was a great time… but as always, great to get back home to my own silly stuff. Below, a beautiful sunset from the crow’s nest; and ollie getting his trout weighed at the big fish tournament.
Italy was a fine party we attended on Saturday evening. Entertainment by Dan Brower, Beth Tom and Joe Myers.
